Law Enforcement Officers interact daily with diverse individuals, including those with hearing impairments. With nearly 10% of the U.S. population experiencing some form of hearing loss—a figure likely to include interactions with law enforcement, particularly as the baby boomer generation ages—it is essential to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA mandates that individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing receive equivalent services to those provided to the broader population, without exclusion or segregation. This course equips Law Enforcement Officers with the necessary procedures to effectively engage with this segment of the community.
This course is mandatory and must be completed no later than the earlier of two dates: the second anniversary of an officer's licensing or the date the officer applies for an intermediate proficiency certificate. This requirement became effective on March 1, 2016.
